I met Lilo when I was 40 and she was a couple of days old. She was a bundle of black fur piled up next to her 8 siblings and mama, nursing as though her very life depended on it. I guess, realistically, her life did depend on it - just not necessarily in that moment. I digress. Lilo wasn’t the biggest or the smallest, she didn’t have the fluffiest or the smoothest fur. There was just something about her that spoke to me. She was to be my dog, primarily. My first ever German Shepherd Dog of my own. I was ecstatic!
One of my best friends in middle and high school had a German Shepherd named Ticket and she was affectionately known as Kit. In my eyes, she was the greatest dog ever. I dreamed of the day I would have a dog like Kit. When I stayed at my friends house, Kit slept with me and I’m pretty sure she looked into my soul and I just loved her.
I went and visited Lilo several times before it was time for her to come home. She was born in November and I was so excited about buying her Christmas gifts! We had a trip planned to Universal Studios that New Year and we stopped over at Disney where I bought Lilo a beautiful leather Minnie Mouse collar and leash set. She had to grow a bit before she could wear it but I think she knew how special it was because she never chewed it or anything and we actually still have it put up for future Lilo babies.
So Lilo came home right after the new year in 2021. She was 8 weeks old and the sweetest, sassiest little thing! She was greeted by four 2-legged siblings (Phillip, Tory, Lindsey & Chloe) and six 4-legged ones (Coco, Koda, Oliver, Baby, Alice, Charlotte and Dixie). We had one outside cat, two inside cats, two other German Shepherd Dogs, one tiny chihuahua (who later had to be rehomed for his own safety because he could NOT accept that he was barely 3 lbs in a house full of much, much bigger dogs), and a lab mix. She fit right in from the get go….. to be continued
